Inks Lake
The old Inks Lake Bridge
over Inks Lake on Hwy 29
A brand-new four-lane bridge now spans Inks Lake, replacing the original Inks Lake Bridge. Fortunately, the old bridge isn’t going away—it’s being preserved as a pedestrian walkway. While diving and fishing from the old bridge are not allowed, it’s the perfect spot to take in panoramic views of the lake, Buchanan Dam, and the steady stream of boating activity. In the evening, a moonlit stroll across the bridge with a gentle breeze off the water offers a peaceful and memorable experience.
Inks Lake lies 55 miles northwest of Austin, Texas, along Highway 29. It’s the next lake downstream from Lake Buchanan on the Colorado River, beginning just below the base of Buchanan Dam. Though it’s the shortest of the first four Highland Lakes—measuring 4.2 miles long and 3,000 feet wide—Inks Lake is often considered one of the most scenic.
Several charming towns surround Inks Lake. Burnet is located 14 miles to the east, Kingsland is just 7 miles to the south, and Llano is 17 miles to the west, each offering their own unique local flavor.
Inks Lake is a haven for boating and water skiing, with stunning views of the bridge and Buchanan Dam adding to the experience. Don’t miss The Catfish Barge, a floating restaurant that serves up delicious catfish dinners alongside picturesque lake and bridge views.

Inks Lake State Park spans 1,200 acres of cedar and oak woodlands hugging the lake’s edge. The park is packed with outdoor adventures including swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, picnicking, and even a round of golf. With 7.5 miles of hiking trails and abundant wildlife—like deer and wild turkeys—it’s a great place to bring your camera and capture the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country.
